How does the Events and Meetings Industry become part of the Metaverse Concept?

What is the metaverse?

The metaverse is a 3D virtual universe— a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. For example, the game Roblox is its own metaverse world, and so are Fortnite and Minecraft. Gaming, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) make up the primary market of the metaverse.

The entire metaverse space as a whole is predicted to be a nearly $800 billion market opportunity. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, “as video game makers continue to elevate existing titles into 3D online worlds that better resemble social networks, their market opportunity can expand to encapsulate live entertainment such as concerts and sports events as well as fighting for a share of social-media advertising revenue.” Not to mention, keynote presentations could also take up space in the metaverse.

How do the speaking industry and the events & meetings industry fit in the metaverse space?

BigSpeak President Barrett Cordero imagines a future of speaking events with VR goggles.

“You will be able to see an entirely different environment in high definition, 3D, 360 degrees while wearing virtual reality (VR) goggles,” explains Barrett in his recent Forbes article. Events in the metaverse space will be highly interactive, “you can interact with other attendees’ avatars (your virtual self) and your environment by wearing haptic gloves (or game controllers). Forget PowerPoint: You’ll be in the presentation, not just watching it” Barrett says.

With AR/VR, everyone in the company can attend an immersive experience, hear the messages and interact in real-time, the day of. Plus, the company doesn’t have to incur the cost of travel both in dollars and time.

The events and meetings industry could see major profits by diving into the metaverse world. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, “Revenue from live entertainment businesses that can become part of the Metaverse concept – films, live music and sports – may exceed $200 billion in 2024.”
