The Importance of the Morning Ritual

The importance of a morning ritual is something that many people overlook. To most, the thought of a few extra minutes of sleep overpowers the need to start the day off with exactly what one’s body needs; a proper morning ritual that will leave you with less stress and more energy throughout the day. Impossible to get out of bed? Snooze your alarm one too many times? Here are trial-and-tested morning rituals that get CEO’s and serial entrepreneurs throughout their busy day:

  • Jon Paul DeJoria, billionaire who co-founded Patron Tequila, wakes up every morning and proceeds to reflect quietly, meditate, and be grateful for what he has. Emails? No way. “I know, I’ve been told I’m a bit old school, but it all gets done just the way I need it to,” he says. “It allows me to focus on the most important things that need my attention.”
  • Business speaker Kevin O’Leary, ‘Sharktank’ investor and entrepreneur, wakes up every morning at 5:45 am to check foreign bond markets. He says, “Good investors don’t stay in bed in North America with strings untied overseas.” After working out for an hour in front of some business television, he makes it to the office by 9:30AM.
  • Kat Cole, the president of the conglomerate in charge of Cinnabon and Auntie Ann’s, wakes up every morning to 24 ounces of water. Cole says she started doing this after traveling in Africa. After getting hydrated, Cole exercises and often has a coffee meeting. She says, “Talking, learning, and thinking with other humans creates a purposeful start to any day.”
  • Cal Newport, who wrote ‘So Good They Can’t Ignore You‘, goes on a walk with his dog every morning. He usually listens to audiobooks and does light exercises during the walk. “This time of year, it’s dark when the walk starts, but I don’t mind the solitude,” he says. “For me, interesting thoughts have a tendency to emerge when the rest of the world is quiet.”

These are examples of successful people who found what works for them. Find what works for you, and build your morning habits so it becomes routine.
